Kasba (Bengali: কসবা) is an Upazila of Brahmanbaria District in the Division of Chittagong, Bangladesh.

Kasba is located at . It has 40901 units of house hold and total area 209.76 km².

Demographics

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Kasba has a population of 243833. Males constitute are 50.69% of the population, and females 49.31%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 112611. Kasba has an average literacy rate of 30.7% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.[1]

Administrative

Kasba has 10 Unions/Wards, 153 Mauzas/Mahallas, and 236 villages. Kasba (Town) consists of 9 wards and 22 mahallas. The area of the town is 4.40 km2. It has a population of 15726; male 50.09%, female 49.91%; population density per km2 3574. Literacy rate among the town people is 43.4%.

Administration Kasba thana was established in 1908 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. The upazila consists of 10 union parishads, 160 mouzas and 236 villages.

Archaeological heritage and relics Sree Sree Anandamoye Ashram at Kheora (seventeenth century), Bara Mosque at Kuti (eighteenth century).

Historical events The ancient name of Kasba was Kailapar. During the Muslim rule in India it was named Kasba. Once Kasba was the temporary capital of Tripura State. It is believed that the king of Tripura established capital at Kasba after his defeat by the king of Kachhara. There are many archaeological relics of the time of the kings of Tripura. Dharma Saagar and Kalyan Saagar were excavated during the reigns of King Dharma Manikya and King Kalyan Manikya respectively. During the War of Liberation the biggest battle-field of Sector 2 was at Kasba. In a battle between the freedom fighters and the Pak army at Kellapathar near Saldandir of Kasba 49 freedom fighters were killed.

Noted educational institutions: Kasba Government High School (1899), Kuti Atal Bihari High School (1918). Kheora Anandamayee High School (1975).

Cultural organisations Public library 1, rural club 15, theatre group 2, cinema hall 2, women's organisation 5, playground 22. Locally published newspapers and periodicals Weekly Agnibina, fortnightly Sakaler Surya.

Main occupations Agriculture 49.32%, agricultural labourer 17.47%, wage labourer 2.81%, commerce 10.19%, service 8.38%, transport 2.32% and others 9.51%.

Land use Total cultivable land 14086.20 hectares; fallow land 50.59 hectares; single crop 22%, double crop 62% and treble crop 16%.

Land control Among the peasants 7% are landless, 37% small, 41% intermediate and 15% rich; cultivable land per head 0.6 hectare.

Value of land The market value of the land of the first grade is Tk 7000 per 0.01 hectare.

Main crops Paddy, jute, wheat, potato.

Extinct or nearly extinct crops Pulse and varieties of oil seeds.

Main fruits Mango, jackfruit, litchi, papaya, coconut and banana.

Fisheries, dairies, poultries Poultry 19, fishery 15 and hatchery 5.

Communication facilities Roads: pucca 50 km, semi pucca 15 km and mud road 237 km; railways 18 km.

Traditional transport Palanquin (extinct), bullock cart (nearly extinct), boat.

Manufactories Flour mill 2, rice mill 29, ice factory 6 and welding 9.

Cottage industries Bamboo work 125, goldsmith 29, blacksmith 26, wood work 70, potteries 14 and tailoring 174.

Mineral resources Salda gas field was discovered in 1996. Total reserve is 200 billion cft, recoverable reserve 140 billion cft. 11 billion cft has already been produced up to March 2000.

Hats, bazars and fairs Total number of hats and bazars are 35, most noted of which are Kasba, Muslimganj, Kuti and Gopinathpur; fairs: Chaumuhani Mela and Monkasai Mela.

Main exports Jute, paddy,potato,fish.

NGO activities Operationally important NGOs are asa, brac, grameen bank, Save the Children.

Health centres Upazila health complex 1, health and family welfare centre 4.

Largest village of kasba upzila is Shimrail where more than 30,000 people is living and lenth of this village is near about 7 km.
